Thinking of buying a stairlift? If your stairs are perfectly straight, with no bends or half landings, you will need a straight stairlift model.
Straight stairlifts are less complicated then curved models as the rail the lift runs on does not need to bend around any turns and will not have the same degree of individuality in its manufacture. This uncomplicated configuration makes the price considerably less than the more complex curved stairlifts.
Features on straight stairlifts vary model to model and manufacturer to manufacturer and you can add optional extras to tailor the stairlift to fit your requirements more exactly. Below we focus on a few of these features, to give you more of an idea of what is available. When speaking to a manufacturer however, ensure you ask for a list of the features that come as standard and which are optional extras.
Stairlift controls
The stairlift rail is fixed to the tread of the stairs and the lift runs up and down operated with controls on either arm rest (depending on your preference) or by separate control units at the top and bottom of the stairs. The controls will either be buttons or a joystick or a choice between the two.
Seat swivel
To make getting on and off the lift easy and safe, many models come with a swivel seat. Powered swivel seats are available, but this will more than likely be an additional extra. Try the seat handle in the showroom and if you have trouble operating the seat, a powered version could be worth considering.
Trim
Many models come with a choice of upholstery and trim to make your straight stairlift more suited to your taste and style, and blend in with your home decor. The manufacturer's brochure or website should give you an idea of the different colours and styles available for each model, if any.
The areas we have talked about above give you a quick idea about some of the features and customisable options available on today's straight stairlifts. There are many more to consider and investigate but hopefully this brief overview has made you aware of some of the options to consider and enquire about.
